A design team, a few days a month.
Fractional
Outcome
A senior designer attached to your team for part of the month — either building the thing or telling you what to build. For teams that aren't ready for a full-time design hire but can't keep going without design.
Two ways to run it
Most people mean one of two things by “fractional”, and they're different jobs. We'll ask which one you want first, and you can change your mind on the call.
- Someone to build it — days held on the calendar every month, product design and design-system upkeep, one thing active at a time in the order you set
- Someone to tell you what to build — answers inside a business day, design reviews on anything in flight, roadmap and hiring input, a written record of every decision. No screens get designed here
Process
Days are held on the calendar rather than sold as a bucket of hours, so nothing is metered and nothing expires — no other project can be booked into your time. Month to month, no minimum term, stop whenever it stops being useful. Genuinely new scope gets quoted separately rather than quietly eating the days you're paying for.
Cost
Quoted per team, not published. How much of a designer you need and for how long changes the number enough that a single figure on this page would be wrong for almost everyone reading it. Tell us what you're dealing with and you'll get a shape and a number back — usually within two working days, and you can walk away from it.
Kind words from kind folks
I've known Julie since undergrad, and she's the perfect combination of founder + product designer for any early stage company. She really gets the founder's POV and she's able to produce immaculate UX work!
Julie is the only designer we've worked with that works like a founder. She doesn't require a vision quest to make good design — she just works fast and gets shit done.
She is unafraid to ask difficult questions and is committed to advocating for design. With a critical eye, she can introspect and evaluate work we have produced as a team to dream up novel ways of doing the same things.
I've always been impressed by Julie's ability to think through the user journey and design really wonderful solutions that provide positive experiences for our users. It's really impressive to see how much thought and detail goes into each choice.
I absolutely love working with Julie. Her greatest strength is her understanding of our users, her ability to think through their problems and think about creative and clear ways to solve them. I always learn so much about our users when I collaborate with her.
Questions, answered
The things people usually want to know before we start. If yours isn't here, just ask.
How long have you been doing this?
Over a decade — through YC-backed startups, a stint at Twitch, and a founder's seat of our own at Revlo. We take a couple of engagements at a time so each gets real attention.
How do we work together?
We start with a call to shape the scope and check the fit. From there it's a fixed scope and fixed fee, and we work in the open — regular check-ins in Figma (and your repo, if we're building) instead of a big reveal at the end. Tight feedback loops, and a clear finish line.
How long does a project take?
Depends on scope: a landing page is about four weeks, or three working days on the Sprint; an audit about a week; a full brand-and-build six to ten. We'll set real dates on our first call.
How much does it cost?
Every project is a fixed fee, quoted up front — no meter running. Tell us the scope and your budget and we'll tell you straight whether it's a fit.
Who actually does the work?
Julie. No handoff to a junior after the pitch — the person you meet is the one designing, and often building, your product.
Can you work in our codebase?
Yes. Several programs include a front-end build where we implement the design directly in your repo. We're at home in modern React/Next front ends.
Do you have a referral program?
We do. If you send someone our way and it turns into a project, there's a thank-you in it for you. Just introduce us.
Do you ever take equity?
Sometimes. We're founders at heart, and occasionally that means taking a stake alongside — or instead of — an invoice. If that's a conversation you want, raise it early.
